Propolis Information
Propolis Information
A sticky glue-like substance, propolis is a residue of tree bark, plant material and debris, mixed with bee secretions. Propolis is used primarily around the hive for repairing cracks in the hive walls, and it also creates a sanitary environment, protecting the bees against bacterial and viral infections. Propolis appears most commonly as a dark brown color but it is also found in other colors such as red and green and even an off-white shade. As with other hive products, propolis exhibits regional and seasonal variations, making it difficult to provide a specific list of nutritional elements and vitamin breakdowns.
Propolis benefits include topical usage for treating inflammations, mouth ulcers, burns etc - it should also be noted that the core constituent of propolis, mainly resin, is an abundant source of bio flavonoids, therefore it is also taken widely as a dietary supplement and associated with treating a range of conditions and promoting specific types of health. It is believed to promote heart health, strengthen the immune system and reduce the chances of cataracts, as examples of the benefits of propolis.
Its natural antibiotic and antibacterial properties make propolis of interest to humans as a dietary supplement. As with other bee products like royal jelly and bee pollen, propolis also contains amino acids which are shown to benefit the immune system.
